Waitrose News Update: Waitrose and The Good Food Guide

Heston Blumenthal Waitrose The Good Food Guide

Waitrose News Update: Supermarket chain Waitrose are adamant that The Good Food Guide will remain impartial despite link with chef Heston Blumenthal.

The Good Food Guide has been purchased by supermarket chain Waitrose in order to improve the reputation of their food.

The Good Food Guide, which was started by Raymond Postgate and was first published in 1951 strives to provide impartial reviews for restaurants and pubs provided by reviewers who voluntarily visit restaurants and print their experiences. The book is published annually and recently listed Heston Blumenthal’s restaurant ‘The Fat Duck’ as the top ranked.

This has however called into question the integrity of the reviews because Blumenthal also has a range of food distributed in the supermarket, called ‘Heston from Waitrose’. The supermarket have explicitly stated that the none of the chefs who have connection with Waitrose will receive special treatment.

Waitrose, part of the John Lewis Partnership, has said that they have made this move in relation to The Good Food Guide in order to establish themselves as experts in the field of quality foods.

The reputation of The Good Food Guide has relied on its uniqueness and independence. The company have insisted that the way they work will not change and they will continue to offer the same high quality, voluntary, secretly orchestrated reviews. They are determined to remain as the leader of restaurant guides and, as founder Postgate said when he first started the guide “you can corrupt one man: you can’t bribe an army” and the company stand by this to this day.

The next edition of the guidebook are expected to be released in the autumn and with it being distributed across the country it will be a testament to it’s longevity if there is no difference in the quality of the content.
