Virgin Media has again been named the UK’s fastest fixed broadband provider by TV and movie streaming service Netflix.

The cable company retained its position at the top of the chart for the fifth successive month after achieving an average performance of 2.47Mbps on all Netflix streams during April, up slightly from the 2.43Mbps recorded in March.

There were no changes in the top four as BT (2.29Mbps), O2 (2.25Mbps) and Sky (2.13Mbps) remained in second, third and fourth places respectively.

However, at the bottom of the ranking, EE – which has assumed control of Orange’s home broadband arm – leapfrogged TalkTalk to move out of last place, having seen average speeds shoot up from 1.76Mbps to 2.1Mbps since January.

Netflix stressed that the average ratings displayed in its table are well below the peak performance delivered by each of the internet service providers involved.

“[This is] due to many factors, including the variety of encodes we use to deliver the TV shows and movies we carry, as well as home Wi-Fi and the variety of devices our members use,” it explained.
