About Merlin Entertainments:
Thorpe Park, along with over 100 other attractions, is a park owned and operated by Merlin Entertainments PLC, but who are Merlin Entertainments, and how did they come to own Thorpe Park?
Thorpe Park has changed hands a number of times since its beginnings, starting out first as a project run by Ready Mixed Concrete Limited who built the park by flooding part of their quarry and building attractions on the remaining land. In 1998, following the popularity of the park, it was then bought by the Tussauds Group, who also owned the nearby Chessington World of Adventures. During this period, the park saw a time of rapid expansion, with multiple blockbuster rides being made during the time, The park was run successfully for a number of years until, in 2007, Merlin Entertainments bought out the Tussauds Group and folded it into their own business, giving them both Thorpe Park and Chessington World of Adventure.
That’s not all Merlin Entertainments own though, because they also own the Legoland resorts, the Madame Tussauds, Sea Life and other brands which make up the highly active UK theme park scene. All in all, Merlin Entertainments if the biggest theme park operator in Europe, and the second largest in the world, behind only Disney in that regard. So, whether you’re getting on the London Eye or the Blackpool Tower, you’ll find yourself in a Merlin Entertainments building.
