Compass News Update: Compass get award from the Soil Association. The Catering Mark recognises food quality, fresh ingredients and animal welfare issues.
It was Edinburgh Zoo that attracted the bronze award for the food served at breakfast, lunch and from the snack menu in the staff restaurant and the Jungle Food Court Coffee Shop and the Penguin Coffee shop as well as the Grasslands Restaurant. These particularly eateries had met the standards that were required for the award in that at least seventy five per cent of the food was freshly prepared on site and that menus reflected the seasons.
Compass are particularly proud of the award as Levy Restaurants which is the sports leisure and hospitality arm of Compass Group has officially been providing the catering at the Scottish Zoo for the past three years. They have supplied farm assured meat and have worked closely with local suppliers to make sure that the products used in food preparation were as fresh as they could be. They have also made sure that they offer wholemeal and gluten free options as well as freshly baked bread and quiche.

The general manager of Levy said that she was very proud of the award that she had felt very passionate about achieving. She said that everyone on the team had worked very hard and supported the overall push for the excellent standards that won the award. She said that the work done and the award achieved perfectly reflected the philosophy of Edinburgh Zoo and Compass and the importance that it attached particularly, to animal welfare.
She said that she was very proud that the restaurants in the Zoo were leading the way in ensuring that all the food served was fresh and nutritious and was also seasonal and healthy. In particular the food is free from trans fats and additives and is from farming sources that ensure animal welfare. She added that the whole team would be working in accordance with the Catering Mark guidelines to ensure that they progressed from the bronze award to the silver and then the gold Catering Mark.
A representative from the Soil Association said that they were delighted that the bronze award had gone to the Compass catered food outlet at Edinburgh Zoo and she added her congratulations due to the fact that they were the first in the UK to have been in receipt of this award. She also said that she was sure that it would not be long before the catering facility gained silver and gold accreditation.
