British Gas News Updates: British Gas offers Free EV Charging
This article is sourced from The Green Car Website: despite new subsidies on electric vehicle (EV) charging points, British Gas have taken EV promotion even further by offering free installation of home charging facilities.
With new Government subsidies for home electric car charging points now coming into force, British Gas is going one better and offering electric car owners the chance to have home charging facilities installed for free.
While the Government is offering grants worth up to 75 per cent of the value of a home or on-street charging point, British Gas promises to cover the rest of the expense, installing a 16 amp data-enabled Wall Box for free and will also give EV owners access to the Polar charging network of more than 1,800 public charge points.
Already the largest supplier of home charging facilities, British Gas is making the offer available to anyone, not just its energy customers, until March 31, 2015. Access to the Polar network is provided by Chargemaster until the end of March 2014.
The Government’s Office of Low Emission Vehicles is launching grants worth 75 per cent of the cost of a charging point, capped up to £1,000 as part of a £37 million package of funding for EV charging infrastructure. A further £11 million is being made available for those without a driveway or garage, so that local authorities can apply on behalf of electric owners for on-street parking charging points.
To qualify for British Gas’ offer, homeowners must agree to have their energy usage monitored using an O2 data network connection.
Included in the offer is a free home suitability survey British Gas electrician, installation of the charge point and earthing connection for safety, access to Chargevision online account management and smart phone app to help you easily keep track of your energy use and a three charge point warranty and three year parts and labour warranty.
Andreas Atkins, Head of Electric Vehicle Services at British Gas, said: “This offer is a milestone for the UK’s electric vehicle market. The number of electric vehicles on the road is predicted to hit 1.5m by 2020, and the Government funding scheme which makes this offer possible is doing a lot to help reduce the cost of owning an EV even further.
“As the offer is open to anyone it’s a great time for the friends or family of EV drivers to install electric vehicle charge points at their homes. For example, if someone is making a regular journey to and from a relative’s house then having a charge point at both destinations could be worthwhile.
As part of the sustainable transport push by the government they announced subsidies on EV charging points. British Gas have led the private sector and have gone one step further by offering free installation of home charging points for electric vehicles. How encouraging to see, in our journey towards environmentally sustainable transport. If you wish to contact British Gas for any reason please call our British Gas customer service number.
