Acer News Update: Acer Moving Away from the Windows Fold
InfoWorld, referring to IT giant Acer recently ran the headline ‘Acer is the latest tablet maker moving away from the Windows fold,’ on their online site.
Woody Leonhard for InfoWorld reported that a Microsoft advert that he described as iPad-bashing and that starred the Acer Iconia W3 had dropped just as the Acer CEO had announced that Acer were moving away from Windows ‘as soon as possible.’
It seems that Microsoft’s new iPad-bashing ad features a one on one comparison of the iPad Mini and the Acer Iconia W3. This was seen as surprising as the day before Jim Wang; president of Acer, in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, had announced that Acer would be ‘trying to grow our non-Windows business as soon as possible.’
Acer News Update
The ad, as expected, highlights Windows 8’s advantages over the iPad Mini pointing out that Outlook looks cool on the 8-inch screen, especially if you have tiny little fingers…However Leonhard maintains that the people who made the ad were definitely up against it. They were, he says, working with a Windows 8 tablet that in his opinion was just horrible. InfoWorld executive editor Galen Gruman commented:
‘It’s thicker, heavier, and slower, and it has half the battery life of an iPad Mini. Its screen is decidedly inferior, with a yellowish cast, a dull appearance, and a limited viewing angle, and its touchscreen needs a heavy touch to respond.’
Although Acer CEO Wang’s was quite frank when he said:
‘The Windows camp now has urgently to do something to regenerate or strengthen buoyancy among PC users.’ He said: ‘The public are not keen to buy and are delaying purchases. Android is very popular in smartphones and dominate in tablets.’ The Acer SEO commented that he could see a new market for Chrome books and that the focus must be on Acer’s market share and in protecting their bottom line. By getting tablets and smartphones right, he said, the company can be ready for the day after tomorrow. Which does leave the question, was the Iconia W3 a tablet done right? Unfortunately, it seems that very few would answer this question in the affirmative.
